Not all Hospitals have an A&amp;E Department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Service-Search\/Accident-and-emergency-services\/LocationSearch\/428\">Find your nearest A&amp;E<br><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you dial 999 for an Ambulance and you have to be taken to  Hospital, then the Ambulance Crew will take you to the most appropriate  A&amp;E \u2013 this may not be the closest. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-column uagb-column__wrap uagb-column__background-gradient uagb-block-d8ebe32c-ffff-42a2-ba06-d28082ea575e\"><div class=\"uagb-column__overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"uagb-column__inner-wrap\">\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/api-bridge.azurewebsites.net\/findservices\/?uid=Z2FyeUBnZW5wcmEuY29t&amp;h=400&amp;o=1&amp;a=1&amp;t=1\" style=\"border: none; height: 400px; width: px;\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to go to A&amp;E<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevicaragelanesurgery.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AdobeStock_144943646-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3186\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An A&amp;E Department (also known as Emergency Department or Casualty) deals with genuine life-threatening emergencies, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/disorders-of-consciousness\/causes\/\">loss of consciousness<\/a><\/li><li>acute confused state and fits that are not stopping<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/chest-pain\/\">chest pain<\/a><\/li><li>breathing difficulties<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/first-aid\/\">severe bleeding that cannot be stopped<\/a><\/li><li>severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/anaphylaxis\/\">allergic reactions<\/a><\/li><li>severe burns or scalds<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/stroke\/\">stroke<\/a><\/li><li>major trauma such as a road traffic accident<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Less severe injuries can be treated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/using-the-nhs\/nhs-services\/urgent-and-emergency-care\/when-to-visit-an-urgent-care-centre\/\">Urgent Care Centres or Minor Injuries Units<\/a>. A&amp;E is not an alternative to a GP appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your GP is closed you can go to <a href=\"https:\/\/111.nhs.uk\/?utm_source=nhsuk&amp;utm_campaign=nhs_services&amp;utm_content=when_to_go_to_ae\">111.nhs.uk<\/a> or call 111, which will direct you to the best local service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can visit an NHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/using-the-nhs\/nhs-services\/urgent-and-emergency-care\/when-to-visit-an-urgent-care-centre\/\">Urgent Treatment or Walk-In Centre<\/a>, which will also treat minor illnesses without an appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens at A&amp;E?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A&amp;E Departments offer access 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  A&amp;E staff include Paramedics, A&amp;E Nurses, Diagnostic  Radiographers, A&amp;E Reception Staff, Porters, Healthcare Assistants  and Emergency Medicine Doctors. These medical staff are all highly trained in all aspects of emergency medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Register<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you arrive by Ambulance<\/strong>, the Ambulance Crew will provide the relevant details to Reception and hand you over to the Clinical staff. If you are seriously ill, the staff will already know because the Ambulance Crew will have alerted them on the way to the Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not in a life-threatening or serious condition, you will be  prioritised by the A&amp;E Hospital Team along with other patients  waiting to be seen \u2013 arriving by Ambulance does not necessarily mean you will be seen sooner than if you had walked in to A&amp;E.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you go to A&amp;E by yourself<\/strong>, you&#8217;ll need to register when you first arrive. You&#8217;ll be asked a few questions such as your name and address, and asked why you are visiting A&amp;E. If you have been to the Hospital  before, the Reception Staff will also have access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/using-the-nhs\/about-the-nhs\/your-health-records\/\">your health records<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve registered, you&#8217;ll be asked to wait until you are called for your assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Hospitals have a separate Children&#8217;s A&amp;E Department where  medical staff are specially trained to deal with children&#8217;s health  issues. You may be asked to go straight to the children&#8217;s area where  your child can be registered and assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need special assistance because of a physical or mental  disability then you should let Hospital staff know right away. The Hospital may  be able to call a Learning Disabilities Liaison, a member of their Liaison Psychiatry Team, or provide any other assistance you or your carer may need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Assessment \u2013 Triage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have registered you&#8217;ll generally be preassessed by a Nurse or Doctor before further action is taken. This is called Triage. The  process is carried out on all patients attending A&amp;E. Triage ensures people with the most serious conditions are seen first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Treatment, transfer or discharge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens next depends on the results of your assessment.  Sometimes further tests need to be arranged before a course of action can be decided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the Nurse or Doctor feels your situation is not a serious accident  or emergency, you may be sent to a nearby Urgent Care Centre, Minor Injuries Unit or referred to a GP onsite. This will reduce the waiting queue in A&amp;E and at the same time allows you (the patient with the lesser injury) to be treated quickly as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The waiting time target for patients in A&amp;E is currently set to 4  hours from arrival to admission, transfer or discharge. However, not all hospitals have associated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/using-the-nhs\/nhs-services\/urgent-and-emergency-care\/when-to-visit-an-urgent-care-centre\/\">Urgent Care Centres<\/a>, which means people with minor injuries may have a longer wait until they are seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases you may be sent home and asked to arrange for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/using-the-nhs\/nhs-services\/gps\/referrals-for-specialist-care\/\">GP referral<\/a> or you may be given a prescription and sent home. Either way, the Hospital will inform your GP that you have been to A&amp;E.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your situation is more complicated, you may be seen by an A&amp;E Doctor or referred to a Specialist Unit.
